Introducing Mrs MumfordIn the evening she received a long introduction by the minister of the church, Rev Sandy Millar. If this is truly the work of the Holy Spirit, then it is very serious. Yet his introduction was one of causal light-heartedness. He related how he had come to hear how his own staff at the church were being affective in their office. It was done in a very light-hearted manner, with the intention of entertaining. Then he comes to prayer, laughing, beginning his prayer with giggles. Isn't it a serious matter when we come in prayer to the God of all, our Almighty Creator, the One who is far mightier than we can ever appreciate, who fills eternity—the God who is so full of holiness that we cannot look on Him, lest we die? The Apostle Paul commands Timothy to "pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, lave, patience, gentleness..." in a very serious manner, to "keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing which He will manifest in His own time. He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of Lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honour and everlasting power. Amen." 1 Timothy 6:11,14-16. The fundamental issue of our relationship and approach to God is given in terms of the "fear of the Lord" in Scripture, a showing of reverence, a deference, and serious respect to Creator and Judge of all. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Proverbs 9:10 "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and / honour and life." Proverbs 22:4 I The Joy of the Lord and laughter are not synonymous. The Joy of the Lord is the experience of knowing one's sins are forgiven, that God has declared we are "not guilty", that the burden of sin has been lifted from us, and that we have peace with God. The Joy of the Lord is an inner conviction and assurance of the love of God for us. We can have that joy whether we feel on top, or whether we are feeling down. It has nothing to do with laughter.
