Qualifications:  Able to Manage Well

Back

Then in 1 Timothy v.4-5 we come to his family. This qualification or characteristic is stated at greater length than the others. This indicates its importance. The man who leads the church must be one who can “rule/manage his own house well”. His children must generally be obedient and respectful. This implies that the leader would normally be a married man—otherwise this could not be said of him! So a pastor must be seen as a man who is gifted with the ability to oversee, to preside, to manage. Paul reasons this quite plainly. If he cannot manage his own family, how could he ever manage anything? And secondly, if he is not able to discharge his responsibility with respect to his own family how can he ever do so with respect to God’s family? The logic is quite reasonable. It is an argument from the lesser to the greater, and the case is clearly stated. It is unarguable.
And what of a Scriptural example? Philip the evangelist is said to have “had four virgin daughters who prophesied” (Acts 21:9). Whatever that really means, it does indicate that he must have enjoyed an early family life that blossomed into a spiritually blessed family.
