Qualifications:  Everything in Moderation

So another characteristic is that the man to be considered must not be “covetous”, or ‘not a lover of money’—but really the word has to do with an inordinate desire for what belongs to others. It proves very difficult if a man is always dissatisfied with what he has, and always wants what he has not got! A pastor who has this problem will be at odds with his people, for they will often have more than he can have. Not that we want to deny such a man the things that we enjoy, but his attitude to them must be right. As we so often prove, the Lord is good. The Lord is no man’s debtor—and He has ways and means of providing us with material things that can be a real blessing.

For a negative illustration, we might think of the rich man who had a wonderful harvest, but whom the Lord required his soul. “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’” (Luke 12:20).
