Qualifications: Non-aggressiveNor is any elder to be violent:—“not violent”—“not one who strikes out”—not a ‘spitfire’ or ‘fire-eater’. Paul is thinking of a man who is always ready with his fists. Someone who is quick to react, and who reacts without thinking and considering—whose action ends up as being wholly inappropriate. Could there be any connection between this and the previous qualification? Between the immoderate use of wine and an eagerness to have a go at someone takes just one small step. Perhaps we should then note what Proverbs 23:29,30 says: “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, those who go in search of mixed wine.”
