Qualifications:  Respectability

Back

A pastor also is required to be “of good behaviour”—that is, “respectable”. This is a word that was applied to moral behaviour. It is translated in 2:9 as “with propriety”, or “with modesty”. A pastor must be a man of inner moral excellence and of outward orderly behaviour. He must be a man of honour, trustworthy, a man of his word, diligent, and honourable in every way. Other people must be able to say of him that he is a man of worth, of value, and who sets an example.

Is he not to be a man like Job? “The Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?’” (Job 1:8). A pastor must be a man of real integrity.
